Happy Friday, my Favorite VIP Readers!
If you’re a library fan, you know we’re winding up National Library Week, which runs April 6-12 this year. It’s a celebration “highlighting the valuable role our libraries, librarians, and library workers play in transforming lives and strengthening our communities.” (https://www.ala.org/events/national-library-week-2025)
I want to celebrate libraries today by telling you how they’ve influenced me. Long before I became a writer, I was a prodigious reader. When I was eight or nine, we were fortunate that our town built an extensive, new library. It was on the other side of town from where we lived, but my mom took me and my sisters to the library every Saturday so we could check out books. It was the highlight of our week. I’d check out twelve books a week, my limit.
Sheesh! I chaffed at my limit! I was finished by Wednesday and had to reread everything again to hold me over to Saturday, even when I got to the big books.
Anyway, I loved the librarians there. When I swept my way through the entire children’s library, one of them helped me to dig deep into the adult library. She introduced me to SciFi: Asimov, Verne, Bradbury, Wells, Clarke, Heinlein, etc. Regency Romance: Georgette Heyer and Barbara Cartland. Mystery: Ellery Queen, Perry Mason, John McDonald, etc. And more!
That one librarian was as excited as I was to expand my reading experience. I wish I could remember her name, find her, and tell her how much I appreciated her efforts. Thanks to her, I read as much as I do across the genres. I see the librarians at the small library in our town of less than 1,000 people, and they’re just as excited when my grandson shows up for Story Time. They know all of the kids’ names. They give their all to encourage the children to read. My grandson positively glows every time he comes home from the library.
Is it any wonder I want to celebrate our libraries this week? We should celebrate them every day!
Some news!
